2. RELEVANCE TO PUBLIC HEALTH 2.1 BACKGROUND AND ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES TO TETRACHLORO- ETHYLENE IN THE UNITED STATES The use of tetrachloroethylene as a dry cleaning agent, chemical intermediate, and metal degreasing agent

چکیده

The use of tetrachloroethylene as a dry cleaning agent, chemical intermediate, and metal degreasing agent has led to its release to the environment. It has also been shown to be produced naturally by several temperate and subtropical marine macroalgae, but the majority of exposure to tetrachloroethylene is still through anthropogenic sources. It is primarily released to the air where it is slow to degrade, with estimated atmospheric half-lives of approximately 100 days. Data compiled from the EPA Air Quality System indicate that the ambient atmospheric level of tetrachloroethylene is typically <1 μg/m . Due to its long atmospheric half-life, it is subject to long-range transport and has been identified in atmospheric samples in remote locations such as Antarctica where no local sources of this substance exist. Levels for tetrachloroethylene in the indoor air tend to be higher. The median value for indoor air in the United States, from 2,195 entries in the EPA’s database of volatile organic contaminants (VOC-AMBI), was approximately 4.9 μg/m, with an average value of 20.7 μg/m .

2. Relevance to Public Health 2.1 Background and Environmental Exposures to 1-bromopropane in the United States

1-Bromopropane is a brominated hydrocarbon that was originally used as an intermediate in the production of pesticides, flavors and fragrances, pharmaceuticals, and other chemicals. It is currently used as a solvent in the adhesives, dry cleaning, vapor degreasing, and electronic and metal cleaning industries. There has been an increased use of 1-bromopropane in the last decade due to its appli...

1,1,1-Trichloroethane is a synthetic chemical. In 2003, the estimated capacity of the commercial production of 1,1,1-trichloroethane in the United States was 510 million pounds. Under the Clean Air Act as amended in 1990, all production of 1,1,1-trichloroethane for domestic use was scheduled to cease as of January 1, 2002. It may be used for essential applications such as medical devices and av...

2. Relevance to Public Health 2.1 Background and Environmental Exposures to 1,1,2,2-tetrachloro Ethane in the United States

1,1,2,2-Tetrachloroethane is currently used as a chemical intermediate in the production of chlorinated hydrocarbons. In the past, this substance was used as an industrial solvent and extractant and was even a component of a few pesticide formulations; however, its manufacture and use as an end-product appears to have ceased in the United States. Present sources of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane are...

1,2-Dichloroethane, also called ethylene dichloride, is a volatile, clear, manufactured liquid that is not found naturally in the environment. It has a pleasant smell and a sweet taste and burns with a smoky flame. 1,2-Dichloroethane is readily soluble in water and several organic solvents such as alcohol, chloroform, and ether. 1,2-Dichloroethane is one of the most widely produced chemicals in...

Trichloroethylene is a major nonflammable industrial solvent. In 2011, the estimated capacity of the commercial production of trichloroethylene in the United States was 270 million pounds. Historically, the most important use of trichloroethylene has been vapor degreasing of metal parts. This use has declined over the past decade due to increased environmental regulations governing trichloroeth...
